Frequently Asked Questions

If you are new to yoga, learning class etiquette and knowing what to expect from your first class may be overwhelming. Fortunately, most yoga communities are quite welcoming and are glad to incorporate you into the fold. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about yoga.

Why should I do yoga?

Yoga will improve your overall fitness level. Yoga also helps reduce stress. Consider that time in the yoga studio as "me time" where you get to shut out everything and take a break.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Yoga benefits your body, mind, and spirit. You can expect improved strength, stamina, balance, and flexibility. Regular yoga practice reduces cholesterol, and your body's aches and pain, often better than pain medication. Yoga can reduce stress and improve sleep. The spiritual aspects of yoga affect each person differently, but can be quite profound.

Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?

Not at all. Your flexibility will increase as you practice yoga. Almost no one comes to yoga with all the flexibility necessary for yoga postures. Learn to grow into your body's own flexibility as you learn to move in each posture or asana.

What is yoga like?

There are many styles of yoga and many different teachers making it hard to generalize. There are gentle yoga classes and rigorous yoga classes. Yoga is like meditation in motion. Look at the class descriptions where you want to attend classes and decide what may best fit your desires and needs.

Will I have to bend in uncomfortable ways?

No, not at all! You should move with your body's own flexibility always. Be open to moving and pay attention to your yoga teacher. You should not nor should you feel the need to twist yourself into a pretzel. Be mindful that there is a difference between pain and being uncomfortable and being uncomfortable in not always a bad thing. It's ok to leave your comfort zone once in a while. 

I'm a beginner, what kind of class should I take?

Well, "that depend"s, is what my teacher always says to me.  It depends on your fitness goals and current physical condition, of course. Usually a Gentle or a Beginner class works well for a beginner. Get to know your teacher and how you move in your own skin, your body; then decide where you want to go next. Take it one step at a time, listen to your body. We also offer a Beginner Workshop about every other month so look our for those and then sign up to attend. It's a great place to learn lots in a 2 hour time space. 

What should I wear to class?

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move and bend freely is best. Many yogis wear long, fitted, strechy pants and shirts that allow free movement of the arms and shoulders. Anything that you feel comfortable in and can move well in is fine. Men should wear T-shirts and women should wear a good bra that supports them well and allows movement. 

What should I bring to class?

For beginners, all you need to bring is a water bottle and a workout towel. We have mats and props for you to use while in the studio.

What do I need to know for my first class?

Wear comfortable clothing and arrive about ten minutes early to let the instructor know it is your first class. We have mats and props for you to use while in the studio. You can do some yoga research beforehand, but it's not required.

I'm pregnant, can I still do yoga?

Yes, but always check with your doctor first to be safe. This may not be the best time to start a yoga practice but it sure helps your body and mind during your pregnancy. Learning breath work is a nice skill to have when you go into labor. Twisting should be avoided while practicing yoga as well as inversions. We invite you to come to a Gentle yoga class or the Meditation class. 

Can children do yoga?

Yes. In fact, yoga offers great benefits to children including learning self-health and body awareness while reducing stress and increasing strength, stamina, mental focus, and flexibility. We periodically offer a kids yoga class so check back with us for more information if your interested.
